New Year’s Resolutions 2017

My resolutions for the new year are:

  • Start working out again / living healthy
  • Reading to learn / for fun, not to tick a box (read slower)
  • Build / making things, enough “tutorial” content for now
  • Start working on startup / company ideas more concretely
  • Write more

For each resolution I will be settings specific, measurable goals to keep myself accountable. I will be doing this over the course of January, so I can start acting on these goals the first day of February.

Working out / healthy living

I fell off the wagon when it comes to working out when I started my internship. Before that point I was working out 5 days a week. Since then I have gained some weight, not a lot, just enough to make me motivated to work out again. So I’m setting myself a goal of working out at least three times a week. Even if this means I have to do it Sunday morning, afternoon and evening (I know this is not optimal, but I want to build the routine of working out three times a week, no matter what).

A small part of this resolution is watching my food intake more. While I eat healthy food, I eat too much of it. The plan is to gradually shrink the size of my portions over time.

As I described in my 2016 Reading Challenge post, I sometimes felt like I was just increasing my “books read” number. This year I’m setting the number for my reading challenge a lot lower (30 books). This will ease the pressure to finish books quickly while stilling pushing myself to read. The reason I want to read is not to tick off books, but to learn new things, gain new insights, or just enjoy some good science-fiction.

In 2017 I will be making a more focused effort on gaining something from the books I’m reading, whether it is information, or enjoyment.

Building stuff

Up until this point I have been learning a lot of stuff. A lot of security related concepts and practice (in my “lab” environment), programming tutorials and exercises, etc. At this point I feel ready to start tackling some real projects. Actually building something useful.

I have some ideas floating around in my head, but I’m not sure which project I want to start with first. Whatever I pick, my goal is to have decided AND started working on it by the end of January.

I have been interested in starting my own company for a long time. I have about a year and a half left until I get my bachelor’s degree, so I want to spend the extra time I have because of that working on concrete ideas and preparation for founding my own startup / company.

I love reading, whether it is books, blogs, essays, as long as it is well written. Writing well is something I want to be able to do myself and to get to that point I have to practice, so that is what I will do this year.
